Based on the title, I expected 2015’s Alto’s Adventure to be, well, an adventure game. It is not. Alto’s Adventure is a smooth-ass side scrolling snowboarding action game all wrapped up as an endless runner.
Alto’s Adventure is really pleasing to look at. The artwork is clean, sharp and colorful without feeling cluttered. While your goal is to just keep snowboarding for as long as possible, the real joy in Alto’s Adventure is to experience the subtle changes in the environment in terms of weather and lighting. It might be winter, but that doesn’t mean that you won’t snowboard through the occasional thunderstorm, complete with distant rumblings. Or, to be backlit against a setting sun while motoring down a steep mountain face. It’s a beautiful and relaxing experience that’s almost meditative in nature. Playing this game gave me the feeling that the developers were really trying to capture some of the zen of snowboarding and the overall experience of being outdoors.

You can earn points as well in Alto’s Adventure by collecting coins and pulling off certain types of tricks and combos. At themoment, I’m just getting a feel for the game and really just enjoying the immersive experience for now, without trying to beat any high scores. In the meantime, it’s back to the slopes, so maybe later!
